Gamelan Pesel of Br. Kehen, Desa Kesiman, Kec. Denpasar Timur, Kota Denpasar, Bali.
Nada Hidup (Notes of Life) is the first full-length album featuring I Wayan Arik Wirawan (Arik) and his innovative Gamelan Pesel (est. 2016). Combining elements of Selonding and Semar Pegulingan, Arik’s unique iron-keyed instruments give the ensemble a distinct timbre. Pesel, literally to mix or mash together (Balinese), reflects how the ensemble was developed by piecing together instruments from numerous gamelan smiths (pande) over time. It also honors the ensemble’s origins—Pe[gulingan] sel[onding]. Although Gamelan Pesel performs regularly in a variety of performance settings, ranging from temple ceremonies and rituals to exhibitions of new and innovative music, the compositions presented here highlight Arik’s playful mastery of the Semar Pegulingan repertoire, both in form and technique.
